THE CGWG RESOURCE CENTRE
Welcome to the Coloured Gemstones Working Group’s Resource Centre featuring training modules on the CGWG Responsible Sourcing Tools.
Inspired by our vision to encourage transparency and traceability within the coloured gemstone supply chain, we have dedicated the last three years to developing a set of practical due diligence tools applicable to all activities and entities of any size within the coloured gemstone supply chain.
The CGWG Responsible Sourcing Tools are for use by CGWG-member staff, and suppliers to the individual brands.
We want you to engage confidently with the tools and to that end we have produced this series of user-guides. They will help you to understand why the tools have been created; how they can benefit your business, the customer-supplier relationship and the industry as a whole; as well as offering step-by-step help on how to complete them.
We hope you enjoy the CGWG Responsible Sourcing Tools Training Modules.
Module 1 - Introduction to the Coloured Gemstones Working Group
This module introduces the Coloured Gemstones Working Group, its members and purpose, as well as the environmental, labour, health and human rights issues associated with coloured gemstone production. It also explains the CGWG’s cooperation with institutions in the gemstone and jewellery industry.
This module is intended for both CGWG members and the suppliers who will be using the Responsible Sourcing Tools questionnaires to gather information about potential risks in their supply chain. We look at the importance of due diligence and the benefits both to CGWG members and their suppliers of using the two types of tools.
Country Risk Alerts produce a snapshot of a country’s governance and are useful for jewellery brands’ procurement departments, coloured gemstone traders and also manufacturers of semi-finished jewellery products, to understand the risks associated with sourcing gems from a particular country. Here we cover how Country Risk Alerts are developed, the indices used and also provide an example of an alert as it would appear in the screening and in-depth due diligence tools.
This module is intended for anyone who has used the CGWG in-depth due diligence tools– both suppliers and customers – and who would like to know how to interpret the results. Here we look at the differences in ratings given for large and small- to medium-sized businesses along with some examples of results gathered, leading to the concluding Continuous Improvement Plan.
This module introduces the Screening Tools, which enable a quick and focused assessments of supplier’s policies and practices. Screening Tools are intended as a way to better understand your business partners and to raise awareness of any actual or potential problems to be addressed.
In-depth due diligence tools are part of the CGWG Responsible Sourcing Tool package to be used with CGWG member suppliers to better communicate between business partners; raise awareness of potential issues; and anticipate and manage risks of coloured gemstone suppliers. This training module covers the basis for in-depth due diligence, the types of non-mining and mining tools, and how the tools are adjusted to cover all entity types and sizes.
